Be A Photoshop Expert In 10 Steps
Here are the ten a few things i recommend you need to do if you wish to be a Photoshop expert.
#1: Own the latest form of Photoshop
It`s pretty difficult to really test out Photoshop if you don`t have your personal copy at home. Getting the latest version is important too. Particularly using the latter versions, CS3 and CS4, additional features are added constantly. These features usually either make your job easier (such as the Adjustments panel), or provide you with tools that did not even exist in prior versions (like a number of CS4`s 3D capabilities).
I do recommend you buy your own copy. Do not used pirated stuff. If you`re a teacher or student who isn`t using Photoshop for commercial purposes, you are allowed by Adobe to buy the educational version at about half-price. It`s as fully-featured because the non-educational version. You can usually buy this version at college book shops, or online at sites for example creationengine.com.
You are eligible to operate your Photoshop software on two machines. I have one copy on my desktop computer and one on my laptop for travel.
#2: Play and Make Mistakes
Experimentation and play is the key to learning something past the basics. Check out all kinds of tools and filters, and find out the things they`re doing with various settings. You can`t really ruin Photoshop. And when you need to do, you can reset all of the defaults by closing Photoshop, then pressing and holding the Shift+Ctrl+Alt keys (Mac: Shift+Cmd+Opt) while Photoshop restarts.
Take a bunch of photos out of your camera (or online) and throw them together. Observe how blend modes change a general image as layers are moved around. Try all of the layer adjustments, and every filter coupled with another filter. Don`t worry if it`s ugly. You`re learning. And there`s always a brief history panel to allow you to support several steps and check out something else.
#3: Take a Class
To be honest, I had an awful Photoshop teacher. He did little beyond schedule what we should were supposed to complete within the textbook. I stopped going at some point. I`d learned what not teach, and 4 years later I had been teaching Photoshop. Exactly what a good teacher can perform is provide you with assignments you never dreamed you could do this (and enjoy!) More importantly, a great instructor can give you personal guidance whenever you don`t even realize you made a mistake, or there`s a typo within the textbook, or you accidentally skipped something, then one goes completely wrong.
Finally, a great instructor will give you projects to achieve that give you real-world scenarios and specifications. This prepares you to make real money with Photoshop.
#4: Visit Seminars
Kelby Training provides absolutely fantastic seminars all around the United States. I have had teachers like the amazing Bert Monroy and Dave Cross. These seminars have increased my creativity and efficiency in Photoshop beyond belief. The day-long seminar is always fun and very inspiring. Go to one of these seminars if you can, or find something comparable in your town.
#5: Read Photoshop Magazines
Photoshop User Magazine from NAPP is the undisputed master when it comes to American Photoshop publications. You`ll find it for $10 at book stores, or you have an automatic subscription when you be a NAPP member. You`ll need that NAPP membership to gain access to the tutorial files online. Each issue includes a bunch of tutorials whatsoever levels, plus reviews of products and news concerning the industry. Playboy suits photographers, designers and hobbyists alike.
#6: Read Photoshop Books
Some Photoshop books out there aren`t so excellent, but most of them are really top-drawer. When it comes to a Photoshop book for purchase, search for three things:
Are the images really beautiful or interesting? I have a book here` taught from before I truly evaluated the pictures. They`re bordering on ugly. Find a book which makes you feel as if you can`t wait to create those images.
Is the book written for your level? It may be really frustrating when the instructions are extremely easy or way too hard for the level of experience.
Does the book suit your learning style? Some books use blocks of text yet others make each walk into a bullet point. Some convey more step-by-step images than others. Decide what works best for you and also look for books written that way.
#7: Do Online Tutorials
I love doing online tutorials. Good quality places to locate Photoshop tutorials are PSD Templates.tutsplus.com, good-tutorials.com, and tutorialized.com. If you work with online tutorials enough, you discover some favorite writers. Look for tutorials writers who provide enough images, proofread their work, and do not leave steps out. You should be in a position to produce a result that appears much like the one promised by using precisely what they`ve written. Just like books, search for tutorials written to your skill level. But push yourself to do tougher stuff than you`re used to.
#8: Be a Community Member
This can take many forms. Sometimes I love to check out online Photoshop forums and find out if anybody requires a question answered. I usually see cool suggestions for myself too. I also spend time on Twitter, and follow a many fellow graphic and Web-site designers. They`re always feeding me new links to incredible online resources. I`ve RSS feeds I just read from my personal favorite design blogs, and I discuss all of the articles that move me. I read everything by smashingmagazine.com and minervity.com.
#9: Learn Other Adobe Programs Too
Photoshop rarely works in a vacuum for most designers. There are many times when a Photoshop project is enhanced by the contributions of artwork completed in Illustrator, for instance.
Learn to save your work for the press using Acrobat. Learn how to create vector artwork in Illustrator and import the paths into Photoshop. Learn how to put your Photoshop files into InDesign. Find out how various Photoshop plugins can expand your design horizons or make your work easier. They are but a few examples. A thorough knowledge of Photoshop must include an understanding of how good it plays with other people.
#10: Teach Photoshop
I wasn`t a Photoshop expert after i started teaching Photoshop. I`m now, thanks partly to using taught it. Teaching Photoshop helped me develop my knowledge of ways that no other experience can. If you need to communicate how you can do something to a person else, you come to understand it in a manner that sets it in concrete in your brain.
